A Hawaii Packing List for a Week, in One Carry-On

A week in Hawaii fits comfortably in a carry-on and a small personal item. Here is a Hawaii packing list for a week that works for most adults, based on doing laundry once or rewearing light clothes.

Carry-On vs Checked: How to Decide

  • Carry-on only suits one-island trips, inter-island hops with short connections and anyone who hates waiting at the carousel.
  • Check a bag if you are bringing golf clubs, dive gear, a lot of baby equipment, or full-size liquids.
  • Keep medicines, documents, a swimsuit and one outfit in your carry-on even if you check a bag.
  • Leave space for the return trip, and remember the USDA inspection when you pack souvenirs.

For liquids, sharp items and other rules, see TSA’s What Can I Bring list. For flights to Hawaii, compare fares on Airfares for Less.

Packing Techniques That Help

Roll soft clothes and use packing cubes to separate swimwear from dry clothes. Put a couple of resealable bags in for wet swimsuits on your last day. Wear your bulkiest shoes and your jacket on the plane. If you are staying somewhere with a washer or a laundry room, plan one wash midweek and cut the clothes count further.

Plan your outfits around activities rather than days: a beach set, a hiking set, an evening set and a travel-day set. Each piece should work with at least two others. Neutral colors and quick-dry fabrics stretch a small wardrobe, and anything that wrinkles badly is better left at home.

Island hopping? Pack so that one small bag holds everything for a night or two; it makes early inter-island flights and short stays on Molokai or Lanai much simpler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit a Hawaii packing list for a week in a carry-on?

Yes, for most adults. Warm-weather clothes are light, laundry is easy to arrange, and the bulky items (beach towels, umbrellas, snorkel sets) are usually supplied or rentable. Buy full-size sunscreen on arrival to get around the liquids limit.

Do inter-island flights have different bag rules?

They can. Inter-island airlines set their own carry-on size, weight and fee rules, and small planes to Molokai or Lanai may be stricter. Check your airline before you pack.
